QUEEN is a rarity among the groups to emerge in the past few years, a heavy metal band yet with intelligence and taste. This English band was formed In 1970 when Freddie Mercury (vocals) joined up with members of the recently defunct Smile — Brian May (guitar) and Roger Taylor (drums) With me addition of bassist John Deacon the group as it plays today was complete. They played original material from the outset, and consequently developed a large following in England especially on the university circuit. By the lime of the first EP in 1973 they had developed a distinctive sound characlerized by a very dense instrumental layering coupled with tightly arranged vocal harmonies. All of the members have impressive education credentials. Brian has a degree in physics. Freddie is an accomplished graphics designer — he created the QUEEN logo. Roger studied to be a dentist, and John has an honors degree in electronics. They have just completed Headlining an American tour which is their second pass through the country (the first being as support for Mott the Hoople last winter) and their single ‘Killer Queen” is selling well for them along with the album that it’s from ‘Sheer Heart Attack”.
