Brian was supporting Guns N’ Roses at the Boston Garden.
The Brian May Band, fronted by Queen’s guitar maven, opened the show with an hour-long set that climaxed with an appearance by Extreme’s Nuno Bettencourt and Gary Cherone. May played several selections off his new “Back to the Light” album, and tossed in plenty of stuff to please Queen diehards.
While much of May’s new material is close kin to the Queen songbook, May showed he’s moving forward while acknowledging his past. A reworked “We Will Rock You” sported added layers of heavy riffing and rhythm over the syncopated chant.
The show became more enjoyable as it progressed, with the band loosening up and stretching both new and old songs. By the full-tilt closing number of “Tie Your Mother Down,” aided by the Extreme boys, May recaptured the interest of an audience that may have strayed since Queen’s heyday.
